Zombie vs. Unicorns–Celebrate Teen Read Week!

This weekend at the Texas Book Festival, I enjoyed getting to hear author Meg Cabot(Princess Diaries, Avalon High, etc.) who was very entertaining.  She shared tales of her numerous rejection letters and how she gets ideas for her books. meg cabot

But the very best part of the Book Festival was Saturday night’s Zombies vs. Unicorn faceoff which featured 17 of your favorite young adult authors like Heather Brewer, Holly Black, Scott Westerfeld, Margaret Stohl, Kami Garcia, Justine Larbalestier  and more.  It was held at AAMP, an interesting warehouse space, and the whole event felt like a poetry slam gone paranormal.  The theme was based on a new short story collection Zombies Vs. Unicorns which is arriving in our library shortly!

photoThe authors were divided into team Unicorn and team Zombie, and each had to spontaneously defend the virtues of the fictional creatures, so that the audience could, in the words of the announcer, decided “Who reigns supreme?  Zombies or Unicorns?”

Turns out that Heather Brewer and Scott Westerfeld were excellent Zombie defenders while Kami Garcia ruled on the Unicorn side.  Ultimately the Unicorns won this epic author battle.

Hopefully this event will make a return appearance again next year at the Book Festival, whose profits go to support libraries.  Till then, Unicorns reign supreme!
